May 2021 book favorites – I only highlight the best for you 🙂 . You’ll notice a theme of dark mysteries and a fun young adult novel.
The Guardians by John Grisham (Mystery/Crime Thriller)
This is my first Grisham book, and I will be picking up many more. The Guardians is titled after a nonprofit that helps get innocent people off of death row. An ex-pastor turned lawyer, works relentlessly to wrong rights even putting himself at risk for his clients. All the character are likeable, and the stories are heart-warming. Plenty of thrill and unexpected twists.
The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee (Young Adult Fiction)
A 17-year-old Chinese girl, Jo, who lives in Alabama works as a house-servant by day and a secret advice columnist by night. This reminded me of a G-rated version of Bridgerton as the protagonist uses her words to stir up mischief in her town. Thought the book was a bit slow at first but it picks up and is a happy read.
You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks (Mystery)
I loved Anonymous Girl by the same author so it felt right to pick up her latest book! One day Shay witnesses a young woman jump in front of a subway train and it completely changes her life. Overcome with grief she starts to dig into this mystery woman’s past to understand why she did what she did. Shay uncovers a group of friends that begin to make Shay think she has a a future at female friendship until odd coincidences between her and the suicidal girl come to light. Quick fun read.
